GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Aug. 23, 2017–A German squad so powerful that exceeded expectations to dominate the European Championships to win its 23rd team gold medal while Denmark took silver for its best finish in 32 years and Sweden earned bronze.
The German team so overwhelmed the other 15 teams in the championships held once every two years that it clinched the title after rides by three of the team combinations so the score of anchor and world No. 1 Isabell Werth on her Olympic mount Weihegold OLD was not necessary for the squad to stand atop the podium for the 23rd time in the history of 27 events.
The ride by Isabell ended with the crowd for the first time ever in one of her Grand Prix clapping in time to the final centerline passage steps by her 2016 Olympic team gold medal mount that earned 83.743 per cent from the ground jury of seven judges for a performance so clean, accurate and with amazing transitions it included 16 marks of 10, the maximum.
But the team didn’t need the score, as Sönke Rothenberger at 22 years of age and his 10-year-old Olympic team gold medal horse Cosmo were the third combination and clinched the title for Germany with a Grand Prix ride that was well above 80 per cent before a couple of mistakes dropped the final result to 78.343 per cent.
“We expected us to be strong,” said German team coach Monica Theodorescu, “but not that strong.”
It was enough to send the two German pairs to the top of the individual leaderboard, with team mates Helen Langehanenberg on Damsey with 74.986 per cent and Dorothee Schneider on Sammy Davis, Jr. on 74.585 per cent in fourth and sixth places individually. The team score after three rides was 227.915, and next in line Denmark and Sweden were unable to overcome the deficit after all four of their rides.
The top five team results: 1. Germany 237.072; 2. Denmark 224,643; 3. Sweden 221.143; 4. Great Britain 219.272; 5. Netherlands 216.628.
Cathrine Dufour and Cassidy placed third individually on a personal best score of 78.300 per cent, a shade behind Sönke and Cosmo but enough to establish them as the newest super stars on a Danish team of all women, two under 25 to make it the youngest in the championships.
The 25-year-old Cathrine has grown up with Cassidy through medal performances at European Championships beginning with juniors in 2010 then young riders in 2011 through 2013 and then the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro last summer.
At an interminable late night news conference (after a lengthy awards ceremony facing an almost-empty VIP grand stand) that the 48-year-old Isabell described as the latest in her life and the driest, Cathrine gave credit to the chemistry of the team and the fact that she was the anchor of the team with pressure on her to help bring home a medal.
“The pressure was super for me,” she said, “the more pressure for me the better.
“Cassidy was quite on fire. It was some of the best I’ve ever had.
“Being here is a dream coming true, it’s amazing.”
The team silver medal was the best for Denmark since the same results in the 1983 and 1985 Europeans.
Great Britain was not on the medals podium for the first time since beginning a string of four championship successes in the 2009 Europeans at Windsor. Carl Hester was on all of those teams including gold at the 2011 championships where he was the top British rider on Uthopia. Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro were lead performers in 2013 and 2015.
