OMAHA, Nebraska, April 1, 2017–Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD won the World Cup Final Saturday, the third annual Freestyle championship for the German superstar.
Isabell and the 12-year-old Oldenburg mare, the No. combination in the world, scored 90.704 per cent, slightly below the 90.720 per cent the pair won the World Cup qualifier at Amsterdam in January.
Laura Graves of the United States on Verdades was reserve champion with a career high score of 85.307 per cent, surpassing their previous best of 85.196 per cent set at the Rio Olympics. Carl Hester of Great Britain on Nip Tuck was third on 83.757 per cent.
“I had the goal to have the best competition in the Freestyle after a great season,” Isabell said after her ride and 27 years since she competed in her first dressage championship. “Weihegold was so focused, she knew it could be her day.
“Laura pushed me up to be the best we could show. Fantastic atmosphere, fantastic competition, fantastic awards.
“It was a very special victory for sure, maybe a reason to keep going for 10 more years.”
All three were riding their 2016 Olympic mounts–Isabell and Weihegold Olympic team gold and individual silver, Laura and Verdades team bronze and Carl and Nip Tuck team silver.
Laura of Geneva, Florida and ranked No. 4 in the world and the reigning U.S. champion having competed on the 15-year-old KWPN gelding in the 2014 World Games, 2015 World Cup Final in Las Vegas and the Pan American Games as well as on last year’s American bronze medal team at the Rio Olympics, said:
“I knew these two (Carl Hester and Isabell Werth) were coming behind me. I was sitting there watching their rides and I didn’t rea;ize how badly I wanted to win.
“When I saw Isabell come out of the arena and the camera panned to the World Cup I thought, ‘I want that so badly.’
“I was a little disappointed… but coming second to Isabell feels a lot like winning.
“It is the first time on a podium as an individual, something I won’t forget.”
Isabell won her first World Cup 25 years ago on Fabienne, her second 10 years ago on Warum Nicht in Las Vegas and with Saturday’s victory has won more World Cup titles than any other rider except for Anky van Grunsven of the Netherlands with nine in the 32 years of the Finals.
More than half of the crowd of almost 8,600 spectators that had watched the Final stayed for the awards ceremony that was perhaps the most boisterous of any with Isabell spraying the Laura and Carl with Champagne then holding the bottle while they took a drink and going to the grooms to give them a drink.
And to bring the crowd to their feet…
