Chris von Martels on Divertimento for the first time broke 70 per cent in the CDI3* Grand Prix Special at the finale of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida Sunday as Canadian riders campaigned for the two individual starting places at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.
Earning for qualifying scores moved to a new phase with the end of the 2016 Florida circuit and seven weeks of CDI competitions. Some riders are returning home with only qualifying competition in eastern Canada the two in the west on the schedule up to the deadline of July 4 while other plan to go to Europe.
Belinda Trussell on Anton remains atop the standings as compiled by dressage-news.com with a four-score average of 73.625. Karen Pavicic on Don Daiquri, Megan Lane on Caravella and Chris von Martels on Divertimento have all fulfilled the requirement for four scores and are bunched on 69.
The score of 70.314 per cent for Chris came in their fifth CDI since beginning the campaign on Divertimento less than two months ago. and was, he said, a “new benchmark.”
“I feel the ride was more of a breakthrough in rideability,” he said, “and there’s a ton of room for more points.”
The average of four scores–at least two at Grand Prix scores and the other two either Grand Prix or Grand Prix Special—can be included from the beginning of 2016 to July 4. According to the selection criteria, each submitted score must be 68 per cent or better.
