FEILDING, New Zealand, Feb. 5, 2016–John Thompson, the Australian-based competitor, rode Antonello to an upset victory over Julie Brougham  and Vom Feinsten in the CDI3* Grand Prix Special that was the first leg of the national championships.

John and the 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding scored 69.706 per cent as the unanimous choice of the five judges to top the field of six starting combinations in the New Zealand Championships. The results ranged from a high of 73.725 per cent to a low of 66.659 per cent.

Julie Brougham and Vom Feinsten who won the Grand Prix Thursday scored 66.863 per cent in the Special. Scores in the Special and the Freestyle count for the championship title.

Wendi Williamson on Dejavu MH placed third on 65.980 per cent.

This was only the second Grand Prix Special for John and Antonello, the previous event being 66.922 per cent at Sydney in May last year.

Julie and Vom Feinsten lead qualifying for the Oceania/Southeast Asia region to start as an individual at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August, with John and Antonello ranked third.
