WERRIBEE, Australia, Dec. 12, 2015–Olympic rider Mary Hanna won the World Cup League Final Grand Prix Freestyle on Umbro Saturday to earn the right to represent Australia at the Final in Gothenburg, Sweden in March.
Mary and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding scored 73.725 per cent for the pair’s 10th victory in 2015, all of them in Australia, and one of only two combinations in the lineup of 12 combinations to score above 70 per cent.
The pair won the Pacific League Final for the right to go to the final of the annual world championship in 2015 but did not go to Las Vegas in April so Australia was not represented.
Maree Tomkinson on Diamantina, on the Australian team with Mary at the 2014 World Games, placed second on 71.075 per cent, in her third appearance at a league final in unsuccessful attempts to be invited to the world final.
Brett Parbery and DP Weltmieser placed third on 69.900 per cent in the final with all staring combinations from Australia.
The Pacific League of Australia and New Zealand is the only one of the four geographic regions–Western Europe, Central Europe and North America are the others–that has a league final to select its representative for the Final of the annual global championship. The other three leagues are decided by points for placings in qualifying competitions or average scores.
Mary Hanna has never ridden Umbro on an Australian team in five years competing in Australia and Europe, but on other horses has ridden in four Olympics, three World Games and two World Cup Finals.
The selection trials for the Australian team for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in summer will be staged in Europe.
