PALGRAVE, Ontario, July 12, 2015–The United States won Pan American Games gold Sunday and a ticket to send a team to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year while Canada took silver and Brazil bronze.

Canada and Mexico qualified one individual for the Olympics through these Games.

The American team of Steffen Peters on Legolas, Laura Graves on Verdades, Kimberly Herslow on Rosmarin and Sabine Schut-Kery on Sanceo held on to the lead they set on the first day of the unique format of mixed Big and Small Tour teams at these championships for the hemisphere held once every four years.

Laura and Verdades posted a personal best Grand Prix Special score of 77.158, just 0.001 per cent higher than their result at the World Games last year while Kim and Rosmarin also posted a personal best in the Intermediate 1.

Canadian combinations of Brittany Fraser on All In and Chris von Martels on Zilverstar set the standard for the Small Tour with personal best scores in the Prix St. Georges and the Intermediate 1 but the Big Tour pairs could not match the American Grand Prix pairs that are ranked No. 7 and No. 8 in the world.

Chris Von Martels on Zilverstar was the highest placed Canadian in the Intermediate 1 after finishing behind Brittany Fraser on All in in the Prix St. Georges, though their scores were close.

“I am very much looking forward to the Freestyle on Tuesday,” he said where the individual medals will be decided with no “bonus” marks for Big Tour.

“I was thrilled with my ride. Zilver was amazing . We have trained very hard the past few months and I think he is peaking at just the right time.”

“All in was great,” Brittany said after her ride in the Int. 1 that scored 76.079 per cent. “The pressure was as high as yesterday and I wanted to do as well if not better that Chris. It was hot out there and the atmosphere was crazy but All In handled it like a champion. He is incredible.”

There were some “unusual” elements in the presentation of the Grand Prix Special section when the public address system that had been playing non-intrusive uring the rides played the Canadian national anthem during the ride by Megan Lane on Caravella for the home team.

If Canada wants to send a team to Rio it must now qualify at least two more riders through world rankings.

Brazil, already qualified for the Olympics as the host nation, sent a talented Small Tour team of four horses and riders and beat out Mexico for the bronze.

Mexico’s squad was cut to three when one combination did not pass veterinary examination and the experience of Bernadette Pujals as an Olympic and World Games rider was not enough to medal on Heslegaards Rolex, the horse she competed at small tour in the previous Pan Ams in Mexico in 2011 and has since moved up to Grand Prix where a “bonus” of 1.5 per cent was added for each of the Nations Cup rides.

Only a single Olympic team spot was available through these Games but individual places for two individual places–one each for North and South America that went to Canada and Mexico that had Grand Prix combinations on their teams.

Teams from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States and Venezuela started the Nations Cup as well as individuals from Bermuda, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Puerto Rico and Uruguay. Argentina, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. included Big Tour combinations.

The introduction of Grand Prix into the team format for the first time at a Pan Ams with a maximum of two Big Tour pairs per team was designed to raise the level of dressage in the Americas.

The Pan Ams are the second largest multi-sport event in the world after only the Olympics and stages the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of dressage, eventng and jumping,
