TORONTO, Ontario, July 6, 2015–A total of 44 horses and riders making up 10 teams and six individuals will compete in the Pan American Games dressage of mixed Big Tour and Small Tour, the International Equestrian Federation (EI) confirmed Monday.
The number of teams is two fewer than the 12 that started at the previous Pan Ams in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011 where the United States won team gold, Canada silver and Colombia bronze. The U.S. team led by Steffen Peters on Weltino’s Magic also claimed all three medals in the individual competition for the first time.
The two-phase Nations Cup starts with the Prix St. Georges and Grand Prix Saturday with the second phase of the Intermediate 1 and Grand Prix Special on Sunday. The individual medals will be decided by Intermediate Grand Prix Freestyles next Tuesday.
The leading nation with a Grand Prix combination–Argentina, Canada, Mexico and the United States are the only such teams–will earn the single starting place available through the Pan Ams at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year.
