THERMAL, California, Jan. 11, 2015–Ann Romney was competing her Donatello at the Dressage Getaway national show in California’s desert country when her husband, Mitt, disclosed that he is exploring another run as the Republican candidate for President of the United States.
Ann competed as an adult amateur at Prix St. Georges on the 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding for the first time in seven months.
Ann was one of three owners of the mare Rafalca that was ridden by Jan Ebeling of Moorpark, California on the United States team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London at the same time as Mitt Romney was in the heat of the campaign challenging Barack Obama’s re-election.
She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998 and started riding with Jan as part of her therapy.
Her imvolvement in dressage became an issue in the 2012 campaign, much of it comedy routines on American television spoofing the sport that were embraced by the dressage community. But there was also some derogatory reporting in national media that supported President Obama and some comments from the White House in an attempt to paint the sport as a reflection of the pursuit of the wealthy and priveleged.
