LONDON, Dec. 16, 2014–Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro set a new world record of 87.460 per cent to win the London Olympia World Cup Grand Prix Tuesday night.
The previous record for the pair from Great Britain was 87.129 per cent set at the World Cup Final in Lyon, France last April. Tuesday night’s world record-setting ride included 17 marks of 10.
Valegro, a 12-year-old KWPN gelding (Negro x Gerschwin), holds world records for all three Grand Prix levels–the Grand Prix, Special on 88.022 per cent set at Hagen, Germany in 2012, and the Freestyle 93.975 per cent set at London Olympia in 2013.
Edward Gal of the Netherlands, who had set a world record on Totilas in the Freestyle at this same show in 2009, placed second on Glock’s Undercover on 80.120 per cent.
Danielle Heijkoop, who was to be a team mate of Edward’s at the World Games but had to pull out when Siro was injured, was third on 77.100 per cent.
Carl Hester, part owner of Valegro and trainer and mentor of Charlotte, was fourth on Nip Tuck with a score of 74.680 per cent.
The partnership of Charlotte and Valegro that has Olympic, world, European championship gold and the and World Cup title said:
“We don’t set out to break a record it just happens–we just want to do our best and any record is a bonus.
“It is a great end to the season and fantastic to be competing in front of the home crowd and Blueberry never fails to rise to the occasion.”
The record came on the 43rd start by Charlotte, 29 years old, and Valegro since beginning their Grand Prix career in March, 2011 and in their first competition since the the World Equestrian Games in Normandy at the end of August.
British judge Stephen Clarke awarded the pair the highest score, 89.300 per cent with Bernard Maurel of France scoring them at 88.900 per cent with the other three judges all above 86 per cent.
The Freestyle, which Charlotte is competing in as defending World Cup champion, will be held Wednesday night and will be streamed live around the world at http://www.feitv.org/live
