VERACRUZ, Mexico, Nov. 17, 2014–Bernadette Pujals on Aurora el Camino led Mexico to the Nations Cup gold medal at the Central American & Caribbean Games Monday, with Colombia taking the silver and Guatemala bronze.

Bernadette and the nine-year-old Mexican-bred mare dominated the two-phase competition winning both the Prix St. Georges and the Intermediate 1 that decided the Nations Cup and qualified the top three teams for the Pan American Games in Toronto next July.

The Olympic, multiple world championships and Pan American Games competitor and Aurora el Camino posted a combined score of 70.197 per cent after being awarded 69.447 per cent in the Prix St. Georges and 70.947 per cent in the Int. 1.

The final Nations Cup standings: 1. Mexico 201.263, 2. Colombia 198.290, 3. Guatemala 195.145, 4. Costa Rica 194.145, 5. Venezuela 193.119.

Individual medals will be decided by the Intermediate Freestyle on Wednesday.

At the previous Games in 2010, Colombia won gold, Guatemala silver and Mexico bronze.

Luis Denizard-Reteguiz, based in Florida and riding as an individual for Puerto Rico on Royal Affair was second overall with a combined score of 68.632per cent.

The 17-year-old Marco Bernal, Jr. on Zalvador was third individually on a combined score of 68.105 per cent while his father, Marco Bernal, team and individual gold medalist from 2010, on Farewell IV had a combined score of 66.540 per cent for sixth place.

Zalvador, ridden by Marco, Jr. for only two months, is a 10-year-old KWPN gelding owned by Alejandro Gomez of Venezuela who bought the horse from France’s Marc Boblet.

Another family duo, Anne Marie Egerström, 21 years old, on Amorino placed fourth individually while her father, Christer Egerström on Bello Oriente was fifth. Their results, however, were not enough for Costa Rica to hold on to the bronze medal place and the nation that had only three combinations finished fourth.
