WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 22, 2014–Emilion SA ridden by Kelly Casey in her first United States Young Horse Championship captured the preliminary five-year-old division Thursday in a Dutch horse sweep of the top four places.
The KWPN gelding (Painted Black x Landwind II B) that Kelly of Livermore, California imported from Holland a year ago scored 8.62 to top the field of 15 starting combinations from across the United States.
Edward, also a gelding (United x Damiro), was ridden by Patricia Becker of Wadsworth, Illinois to second place on 8.46 while amateur DG Edorijke with amateur Ashlyn De Groot of her family’s DG Bar Ranch in Hanford, California placed third on 8.26.
The final for the five-year-old horses will be held Saturday.
Kelly and her friend Bob Tenwolde in the Netherlands bought Emilion as an unbroken three-year-old as sales prospect. Bob began training the horse in Holland until Kelly brought Emilion, micknamed “Eeyore,” to her San Francisco Bay area farm in July, 2013.
Every time she thinks of putting him on the market, Kelly said, “he reveals another layer of talent. His athleticism, ability to collect and the correct use of his whole body, make riding him daily an absolute pleasure and confirm my belief that he is on the road to Grand Prix.”
Although her business, KC Dressage, is a training and sales operation with a mix of young horses, imported sales horses and amateurs the young horse championships at this Chicago suburban show ground is her first.
Bob Tenwolde visits frequently from his Netherlands base to help train and develop horses in Kelly’s stable.
