VERDEN, Germany, Aug. 8, 2014–Emmelie Scholtens of the Netherlands rode Estoril to victory in the consolation final for five-year-olds Friday to become one of the top three to make it to the World Young Horse Championships.
Petersborg’s Qasanvoa owned and ridden by American amateur Matt Johnson posted the highest trot mark–9.3–of the entire class with gushing praise from the judging panel but was let down by a score of 5 for the walk.
Emmelie and the KWPN stallion (Zhivago x Gribaldi) scored 8.4 with a 9.4 for the canter. Litvinenko Sjaelstofte, a Trakehner stallion, ridden by Anne Troensegaard of Denmark were second with 8.34 while the Swedish Warmblood gelding Revolution ridden by Anna Svanberg was third on 8.18.
Qasanova was ridden by Matt Johnson, a real estate agent based in Wellington, Florida, to become the top five-year-old in the United States to qualify for this world championship. In the first round qualifying, the 44-year-old Matt and the Danish Warmblood stallion (Quaterback x Calypso II) were making their debut in competition outside the United States and placed 24th out of 34 starting combinations.
However, in the consolation final the trot work was praised without qualification by the panel of four international judges. The pair was awarded a total of 7.52 for 12th place with the 9.3 for trot, 8.8 for canter and 5 for the walk. The rideability was marked at 7.5 and submission 7.
Juan Matute, the 16-year-old Spanish junior star rider who is also based in Wellington, rode Jamaicano de Ymas III for a score of 6.94.
