VERDEN, Germany, Aug. 7, 2014–Sezuan 2, the Danish Warmblood stallion ridden by Olympian Dorothee Scheider, on Thursday won the five-year-old qualifying competition for the World Young Horse Championships.
The dark bay (Blue Hors Zack x Blue Hors Don Schufro) earned a mark of 10 for the canter and a final result of 9.68 points with the German Sporthorse stallion DSP Belantis ridden by Beatrice Buchwald second on 9.54 and the KWPN stallion Eyecatcher ridden by Kirsten Brouwer third on 9.52.
Dorothee, who rode for Germany at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, competed the horse for the owner, Gestüt Peterhof of Perl, Germany.
Sezuan had come into these championships as a favorite and the judge’s marks of 10 for the canter, 9.5 for both the trot and the walk and 9.7 for rideability and final impression bore out the predictions.
The horse had been owned equally by Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand nd Peterhof for two years until six months ago Peterhof bought full ownership.
The gray DSP Belantis by Benetton Dream out of an Expo’se mare was consistent in all aspects–9.6 for walk, trot, canter and general impression, with 9.3 for submission.
The KWPN chestnut stallion Eyecatcher ridden by Kirsten Brouwer of the Netherlands placed third with the trot scoring the highest among the top three at 9.80.
Juan Matute, the Spanish junior rider based in Wellington, Florida at 16 years of age may have been the youngest ever rider in the championships when he competed Jamaicano de Ymas III, a PRE stallion(Estanquero de Ymas x Superior II).
Juan, a star on Florida’s Global Dressage Festival winter circuit competing different horses from Junior levels up to Under-25 Grand Prix, scored 6.76.
