AACHEN, Germany, July 19, 2014–Totilas ridden by Matthias Alexander Rath led a parade of four 80 per cent Grand Prix Special rides–three German combinations with world record holder Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro placing second in the World Equestrian Festival CDIO5* Saturday.
It was the first time in history that four combinations scored above 80 per cent in the same Special, according to a check of International Equestrian Federation (FEI) records. Totilas scored 84.529 per cent, 1.372 per cent ahead of world No. 1 Charlotte and Valegro on 83.157 per cent, that also was a personal best Special result for Matthias and the 14-year-old black KWPN stallion.
Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW were third on 82.078 per cent and Isabell Werth on the 10-year-old Bella Rose on whom she scored the first 80 per cent Grand Prix in her career just weeks ago was fourth on 81.471 per cent.
With just five weeks to go to the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France Germany could be the first team in the history of championship dressage to have all three 80 per cent scores that count for the Nations Cup. It was also fitting that the results came in the inaugural dressage event at the Deutsche Bank Stadium, newly extended at a cost of €8 million (US$10.8 million).
To put as little stress as possible on Totilas, he will not perform in the CDIO Freestyle Sunday. All four German team horses qualified for the Freestyle but as only three are allowed from the same nation, Totilas was not selected. Instead, Helen and Damon Hill, Isabell and Bella Rose and Kristina Sprehe and Desperados FRH will compete.
The ride by Charlotte on her double 2012 Olympic gold medal partner was a recovery from their sub-par performance in the Grand Prix two days ago when the pair scored 76.900 per cent in their first show back since winning the World Cup in April.
However, as the holder of all three Grand Prix level world records and a relatively light competition schedule the crowd was somewhat subdued even after the score put them at the top of the leaderboard with the German triumvirate still to come.
The pint-sized Helen Langehanenberg who has ridden Damon Hill, a 14-year-old Westfalen stallion to rank No. 2 in the world, produced a copybook performance except for a stuttering start to the first extended trot and a shaky final halt. That was a reminder of the horse stopping early in the Grand Prix and Helen’s reaction caused a leaping finale.
Isabell Werth, Germany’s most decorated championship rider, received louder acclaim from the crowd than Totilas for her ride on Bella Rose, the 10-yer-old mare that like all her horses she has trained from a youngster.
