AACHEN, Germany, July 18, 2014–Isabell Werth rode Don Johnson FRH to victory in the CDI4* Grand Prix Special Friday night, recovering from the pair’s worst ever Grand Prix result at the World Equestrian Festival just two days ago. The United States’ Kathleen Raine on Breanna rode to a personal best Grand Prix Special result.
Isabell and the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding rode a steady, controlled test to score 76.765 per cent for the win that was more like the pair typically score and not the 69.920 percent that was their first Grand Prix result below 70 per cent two days ago.
The horse did not appear to be affected by the full Deutsche Bank dressage stadium that has been expanded to enclose all four sides with room for 6,300 speactators.
Fellow German Jessica von Bredow-Werndl rode Unee BB, who won the Grand Prix Wednesday, to second place in the Special with a score of 74.000 per cent.
Poland’s Beata Stremler on Rubicon D, emerging as a top performing partnership after just four months at Big Tour, placed third on 72.627 per cent. The pair placed third on 72.400 per cent in the Grand Prix that was a personal best score as was the Special result at the world’s premier dressage event.
Kathleen Raine of Murietta, California, a last-minute addition with her Breanna to the U.S. contingent of eight horses and riders after Steffen Peters was forced by pneumonia to withdraw, logged a personal best score of 71.804 per cent in the Special.
Kathleen has been competing the 14-year-old Hanoverian mare at Big Tour for three years on both sides of the Atlantic and placed ninth at the U.S. championships last month to miss out on being one of the eight horses and riders to go to Europe to seek to be on the American team at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France in August.
However, the pair were already in Europe and were added to squad for this competition.
Their previous highest Special result was 71.542 per cent in Germany a year ago.
