FRITZENS, Austria, July 6, 2014–Steffen Peters and Legolas led an American parade filling second through fourth places to be beaten for the top place in the Schindlhof CDI4* Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday by hometown favorite Victoria Max-Theurer on her Olympic mount Augustin OLD.

Vici and the 14-year-old Oldenburg stallion scored 80.725 per cent for the fourth win in four Big Tour starts at this Tyrol mountain estate where the Americans came to prepare for the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany next week and the world championships in Normandy next month.

The score of 78.925 per cent for Steffen and the 12-year-old Westfalen gelding was not their highest in more than two years of competing on both sides of the Atlantic but was enough for second place and to lead the group of Americans.

For Adrienne Lyle of Ketchum, Idaho and and Wizard, whom she competed at the 2012 Olympics, the result of 77.375 per cent was a personal best, eclipsing the 77.275 per cent attained in Wellington, Florida in 2012.

Tina Konyot of Palm City, Florida and her Calecto V that she rode at the 2010 world championships in Kentucky and the London Games were awarded 75.400 per cent for fourth place.

Victoria Max-Theurer, the Austrian champion who competed in three Olympics by the time she was 26 years old, said she loved the competition with the Americans in the first of two shows to prepare for the WEG.

“Steffen is such a great rider both in the United States and Europe,” she said, “as are the other Americans. It was wonderful to be competing at the same great show.”

Victoria donated her €10,000 (US$14,000) prize money from the show to the therapeutic riding center supported by Swarovski that organizes the competition.

Steffen had nothing but praise for the show but was critical of his performance on Legolas.

Both he on Legolas and Vici on Augustin had mistakes in the two-tempi changes, he noted, but the Austrian rider performed a second line that were good.

“On the one side I’m obviously happy,” he said. “We did so many wonderful things, but there’s always something little.

“There hasn’t been a clean test for a way too long. We’re making progress; it felt good in the warm up. But with Legolas only one little thing needs to go wrong and we miss a change.

“I’m always thinking about that going into Aachen and the WEG. It’s even more important now to support my team.

“We have to get rid of the mistakes, even if it’s only one.”

Looking back over his history, he said, he’s found it better to compete in back-to-back shows that keep mistakes to a minimum as they are clear in his mind from the previous event.

“Legolas is very fit and I’m looking forward to support my team as good as I can in Aachen.”

Adrienne Lyle who has brought Wizard back from a lengthy absence from competition after an injury in 2013 to again rank among the top American horses said she could not be happier they produced a personal best result in their first ever Freestyle in Europe.

After what she described as “a major bobble” in the Grand Prix a day earlier, “I’m thrilled he came back so great, he is so reliable. It was a glitch that I don’t think will happen again.”

She wondered beforehand whether her music would be liked, but after Saturday nght’s traditional gala hosted by the Haim-Swarovski family that featured American music “that made me more comfortable.”

“I feel like I’m in a position now where we are going up and up,” she said.

“This was a long trip and we’re at altutude in the hot sun. If we can do this, we’re pretty good–he’s totally chilled out.”
