LAUSANNE, Switzerland, May 13, 2014–The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) on Tuesday set a deadline of Sept. 1 for candidates to submit applications for election of president of the governing body of global horse sports and moved the general assembly where the election will be held in December to Baku, Azerbaijan from Dubai.
The timeline for the election was set by the FEI Bureau two weeks after an extraordinary General Assembly changed the charter of the organization to extend the number of four-year terms to three from the previous limit of two terms.
Princess Haya, the president whose second four-year term expires at the end of this year, has not confirmed she will run for a third term but is expected to do so.
Swiss businessman Pierre Genecand, 64, at this stage is the only candidate to have officially declared his intention to seek the post.
The FEI said that to align the application process, the deadline for all other open positions on the FEI Bureau and Technical Committees was extended to Sept. 1, except for the Athletes Committee for which elections are being held until June 1.
The General Assembly where the election for president will be held Dec. 14 was moved to Baku, Azerbaijan from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the home of Princess Haya.
