Mariett, the Danish Warmblood mare that made a miracle recovery from a serious hoof injury, is suffering from an abscess and the 16-year-old horse ridden by Florida-based Lars Petersen of Denmark on Tuesday was scratched from the World Cup Final in Lyon, France this weekend.

Russia’s Elena Sidneva and Romeo-Star were named as replacements, joining compatriot Inessa Merkulova and Mister X.  Elena and the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Romantic Star x Mister A) competed in both the Central and Western European Leagues posting a high of 71.725 per cent at Neumünster, Germany in February.  The pair ranked seventh in the Central European League.

Lars and Mariett was the top placing combination in the North American League of Canada, Mexico and the United States, achieving a top score of 79.950 per cent at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida in March.

Mariett was found to have the abscess on the right hind foot after arriving in Europe Sunday, reported Melissa Taylor, the wife and business partner of Lars.

This World Cup was to have been the first international championship for Lars since he rode Blue Hors Cavan to reserve champion at the World Cup Final in 2002.

“The shoe is off but I don’t think we can go to the World Cup,” Melissa told dressage-news.com. The foot with the abscess is different than the one that was torn off in a freak accident in Mariett’s stall that was thought to be career-ending but was nursed back to top form over two years.

Mariett is entered for the Horse and Dreams Meets Brazil CDI4* in Hagen, Germany next week and is expected to have recovered in time for the event that is considered the launching of the European premier outdoor circuit.

Mariett (Come Back II x Sidney) is one of three Danish combinations nominated for the annual global championship along wih the Florida-based Mikala Münter Gundersen and My Lady and Nanna Merrald and Millibar. Lars, who rode for Denmark at the Olympics, world championship and World Cup, has been based in Florida for more than a decade. Mariett is owned by Marcia Pepper and Lars.
