SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, California, Mar. 30, 2014–Steffen Peters and Legolas were in top form in taking the Festival of the Horse Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday with the highest score by an American rider and horse this year.

Steffen of San Diego, California and the 12-year-old Westfalen gelding scored 79.425 per cent, their third highest freestyle result for the country’s leading dressage partnership that is now more than two years old.

Michelle Reilly of Encinitas, California and Umeeko placed second on 71.025 per cent and Elizabeth Ball of Encinitas, California and Liaison were third on 70.950 per cent.

Steffen and Legolas are ranked No. i in the U.S. leading to the World Equestrian Games selection trials in Gladstone, New Jersey in mid-June.

“We were right on the money today, every beat and footfall was right there,” Steffen said. “That’s how I like to ride freestyles and I think Legolas liked it too. We got clean changes today right off the bat and I felt like I was able to take a deep breath and really enjoy the rest of the test.”
