GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Mar. 1, 2014–Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB completed their domination of the Gothenburg Horse Show with a victory in the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday after claiming the Grand Prix a day earlier, and assured the pair a place in the Final in Lyon, France next month.
Jessica and the 13-year-old KWPN stallion (Gribaldi x Dageraad) scored 81.350 per cent in the Freestyle for the win over Patrik Kittel riding Toy Story before a home crowd who received marks of 79.025 per cent with Denmark’s Nanna Skodborg Merald on Millibar in third place on 77.950 per cent.
“I didn’t expect it,” said the 28-year-old who married last summer. “This is my very first World Cup season, I had never done a World Cup competition before, but we have been steadily improving and I am so proud of Unee.”
The second of her victories came exactly one year to the day since Jessica began competing Unee BB at international Grand Prix. The result was not their best so far, though, as the pair scored 82.425 per cent at the Neumünster, Germany World Cup event two weeks ago.
The result for Patrik and Toy Story, a 14-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding he owns with the parents of his Australian wife, Lyndal Oatley, was by far a personal best–the previous high was 76.075 per cent in Salzburg, Austria 15 months ago.
The win moved Jessica up to third place with 60 points in the Western European League behind Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmsson-Silfven with 74 points and fellow German Isabell Werth in second with 63 points.
Gothenburg was the seventh of eight qualifiers in western Europe, the last one scheduled for ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands on Mar. 22 ahead of the Final in Lyon on April 17.
