MECHELEN, Belgium, Dec. 27, 2013—Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW, the world’s No.2 combination, won the World Dressage Masters CDI5* Grand Prix Friday with a score of 76.915 per cent that was the lowest for the German pair in 20 months.
Helen and 13-year-old Westfalen stallion (Donnerhall x Rubinstein I) were placed first by three of the five judges with one awarding the pair an 80 per cent mark for a final result that has been unusual in the past two years. The pair have scored less than 80 per cent only three times in 27 starts since the 76.125 per cent posted in the Grand at the 2012 World Cup Final.
High winds caused the tent in which the horse was stabled and the location of the warmup arena to flap loudly made Damon Hill extremely tense.
“It is very stormy weather now and… Damon Hill was very fresh, sometimes he even bucked,” she said of the warmup, and it showed in the competition with uncharacteristic mistakes in both the two-tempi and one-tempi changes and the final centerline.
The Netherlands’ partnership of Danielle Heijkoop and Kingsley Siro cemented their status in the top echelon of the sport with a second place finish of 75.766 per cent after a year in the senior Grand Prix ranks.
German Olympian Ulla Salzgeber placed third on on Herzruf’s Erbe with 74.362 per cent in the German pair’s comeback from an injury timeout.
The CDI3* Grand Prix Frestyle was won by Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and Deja in their first Big Tour show with 76.600 per cent, Madeleine Witte-Vrees of the Netherlands on Vitana V was second on 75.800 per cent and Inna Logutenkova of the Ukraine and Don Gregorius third on 71.825 per cent.
