SYDNEY, Oct. 26–Australia’s four-time Olympian Mary Hanna rode Sancette to their first CDI victory in winning the Saddleworld Australian Championships CDI-W Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night, three years after their Big Tour debut at this same show grounds.
The result of 70.85 per cent for Mary and the 12-year-old Sancette put them into contention for their sixth national title, to be decided by the Grand Prix Special on Sunday. The champion is the combination achieving the best two scores in either the Grand Prix and Freestyle or the Grand Prix and the Special.
Sheridyn Ashwood and Prestige VDL, who have been the most successful Aussie competition pair this year in 14 CDI starts–six of them victories–were second on 70.23 per cent.
The veteran combination of Heath Ryan and Regardez Moi were third on 69.55 per cent, 0.05 per cent ahead of his wife, Rozzie Ryan, who scored 69.50 per cent on GV Bullwinkle for the fourth spot. Maree Tomkinson and Diamantina IV, who won the Grand Prix, faded to fifth place with a score of 68.15 per cent.
The triumph for Mary and Sancette came 3 1/2 years after buying the Hanoverian gelding (Sandro Hit x Contender) which was owned by Gwen Blake of the United States and had been finished to Grand Prix by Steffen Peters.
In their 35 CDI starts since then, 23 of them in Europe including the London Games where she rode on her fourth Australian Olympic team, Mary and Sancette notched nine top three placings but never a victory before Saturday night.
“He’s not so fit as he hasn’t been back in work so long, we almost didn’t make the trip but he was telling me that he wanted to so here we are,” said the 58-year-old rider who had not competed Sancette since November last year.
“He wasn’t at his best yesterday but I was absolutely thrilled with him tonight and I’m really looking forward to him improving even further.”
