WARENDORF, Germany, Sept. 8–QC Flamboyant became the five-year-old German champion when Marita Pundsack rode the Oldenburg stallion in an upset Sunday after earning a start in the Bundeschampionate final with a victory in the consolation final and then led an Oldenburg sweep of the top three places.
Flamboyant (Fidertanz x De Niro) was awarded 9.5 for the trot, the highest in the class, 9 for canter and 8 for walk that with 8 for rideability and 9 for general impression gave them a total of 8.7.
Sir Heinrich OLD (Sir Donnerhall I x Fürst Heinrich) with Anja Willimzig aboard was reserve champion on 8.6 after posting 8.5 for every category except a 9 for genera impression while Soiree de Saumur (San Amour x Latimer) ridden by Ann-Kristin Dornbracht placed third on 8.5 after winning the qualifier two days earlier.
Marita was almost speechless after her victory on the Belgian-owned black stallion.
“I would not have thought that it would go like this in the finals,” she said.
The pair performed in the first half of the class of 16 starting combinations with a wonderful ride by Marita, though their score of 8.7 was not expected to hold up against the favorites still to come.
Christoph Hess, the commentator, used the un-German like phrase “Sahneteilchen“ (gorgeous) to describe Flamboyant.
