WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 24–Fashion Design OLD, ridden by the American-based German Nadine Buberl, became the United States five-year-old champion Saturday while DG Dancing Queen ridden by the 19-year-old California amateur Ashlyn De Groote was reserve champion.

Fashion Design, owned by Michael Davis, received a score of 9.06 in the championships that counted for 60 per cent of the total and, combined with their 8.94, from the preliminary competition gave them an overall score of 9.012.

Nadine, based at Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, has competed Fashion Design OLD (Faustinus x De Niro) in Florida and the New York region over the past six months.

Ashlyn De Groot of Hanford, California, an Dancing Queen scored 8.86 in the championship event after 9 in the preliminary that gave them a total of 8.916.

Fiderhit OLD, also ridden by Nadine, produced a strong championship test for a score of 8.7 that, combined with their preliminary ride of 8.5 gave them a total of 8.62 for third place.

For Ashlyn, the championships with coaching from lifetime trainer Willy Arts “have been amazing” experience with three horses that she is riding in the five and six-year-old championships.

She has no regrets about turning down an invitation to compete Daline DG at the World Young Horse Championships in Verden, Germany earlier in August.

Ashlyn has been competing Dalina DG only since February and “to push it to go to Verden would not be fair to the horse.”

Laura Wharton-Mero of Woodstock, Georgia and A) and her nine-year-old KWPN gelding, Zandor (Florencio x Amulet) won the Developing Grand Prix Championship with a result of 66.715 per cent after combining results of the qualifying and final tests.

Kathy Priest of Versailles, Kentucky on her own 10-year-old KWPN mare, Wild Dancer (Florett AS x Reality B) was reserve champion on 66.253 per cent with Katie Riley of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey and the nine-year-old KWPN stallion, Zanzibar (Consul x Farmer) placed third on 66.090 per cent and won the award of the highest placed U.S.-bred horse.
