VERDEN, Germany, Aug. 9–Laura Stigler, the little sister of American dressage rider Silva Martin, rode Doubleyou W to a German sweep of the top five places in the World Young Horse Championships 6-year-old qualifier Friday, but the United States’ Charlotte Jorst aboard her Vitalis stole the hearts of the crowd as she smiled her way through a ride that placed ninth and won automatic entry to the final.
Laura and the Hanoverian gelding (Don Romantic x Rohdiamant) were awarded 9.8 for the canter with 9.4s for the trot and general impression, a 9 for the walk and 8.8 for submission that gave the pair a total of 9.28.
Eva Möller on Sa Coeur, the partnership that won the 5-year-old championship last year, placed second just 0.14 behind with 9.14 that included 9.6 for the walk.
Helen Langehanenberg on Damon’s Delorange, an offspring of her Olympic team silver medal mount Damon Hill NRW, was just 0.02 further back on 9.12 for third place.
Andreas Helgstrand of Denmark and Floricello 2 won the 5-year-old consolation final with 8.80 with fellow Dane Allan Gron on Zick Flower second on 8.22 and Jessica Michel of France and Don Juan de Hus third on 8.20 and will move on to the world championship final. (full results below)
In the 6-year-old qualifier, Germany filled seven places in the top 12 of the 40 starting combinations from 16 countries that automatically go to the final, the Netherlands two, Sweden two and the sole U.S. representative at these championships rounding out the group.
Monica Theodorescu, the German national coach, said the country had a strong lineup of six-year-olds for the 2013 championships, unlike the five-year-old division.
The combinations proved her right.
That Eva Möller and Sa Coeur were the first to go in the class Friday did not appear to penalize the Oldenburg gelding (Sir Donnerhall x Don Davidoff).
The Netherlands’ Mirelle van Kemenade-Witlox and Decor Cachet L, a KWPN stallion (Jazz x Ferro) was the highest placed non-German pair, placing sixth on 8.68, including 9.8 for the canter.
However, Friday’s competition belonged to Doubleyou W ridden by Laura Stigler, who apprenticed to German Olympian Rudolf Zeillinger before moving to work for Sweden’s Jan Brink for three years.
Now, however, she trains horses owned by Lena Charlotte Walterscheidt in Germany, including Doubleyou W.
The pair qualified for the Bundechampionate, Germany’s national championships, at Langenfelder recently.
