The makers of the Adequan reported Monday that its products for horses and dogs will be available by the end of this month following completion of upgrades to its Shirley, New York manufacturing plant.

Luitpold Animal Health, a division of Luitpold Pharmaceuticals Inc. and manufactures of Adequan IM, Adequan IA and Adequan Canine, announced the revised target date of late August for availability of Adequan products and not the previous estimated date of the first quarter of 2014.

The renovations and upgrade to its facility in 2012 affected Luitpold’s ability to manufacture and release Adequan, resulting in the current shortages. Luitpold has been working closely with the United States Food and Drug Administration to ensure that Adequan is made available as soon as possible.

The New York production plant is the only manfacturing facility in the world of Adequan, a polysulfated glycosaminoglycan for horses and dogs.

Adequan IM and IA are the only polysulfated glycosaminoglycan approved by the FDA for treatment of non-infectious degenerative and/or traumatic joint dysfunction and associated lameness in horses while Adequan Canine is the only polysulfated glycosaminoglycan approved by the FDA for the control of signs associated with non-infectious degenerative and/or traumatic arthritis of canine synovial joints.
