AACHEN, Germany, June 30–Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW captured the Freestyle Sunday to sweep the CDIO5* and become champions of the World Equestrian Festival for for the second year in a row, the first repeat champion since Isabell Werth in 2007/2008.
The German 2012 Olympic combination that won the World Cup title two months ago was scored 85.300 per cent for the performance before a standing room only crowd of 5,000 spectators in the imposing Deutsche Bank stadium that was bathed in sunlight for most of the freestyle, after four previous days of rain and overcast skies.
Helen and the 13-year-old Westfalen stallion won all three levels for the championship, the Grand Prix, Special and the Freestyle as they did last year.
Isabell, who holds the record of nine CDIO titles, placed second on Don Johnson FRH with a score of 82.075 per cent that is likely to insure she joins Helen and Damon Hill on the German team for the European Championships in Herning, Denmark in late August.
Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, who performed two duties this weekend as her Denmark was the official partner and as a member of the royal family had to fulfill official engagements, finished third on Digby with 80.900 per cent. The horse that she rode in both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics is consistently among the top performers in the world at the age of 16.
The young Danish star, Anna Kasprzak and Donnperignon were the only other combination above 80 per cent with a score of 80.475 per cent and were reserve champions in the CDIO standings while her coach, Andreas Helgstrand and Akeem Foldager placed fifth on 79.175 per cent.
The United States’ Steffen Peters, who was the CDIO champion here on Ravel in 2009, made some adjustments to the opening moves of their performance and executed well to finish in sixth place on 78.675 per cent.
Compared to the Grand Prix Special where the horse missed on both the two lines of one-tempi changes, there was a “gigantic step” in improvement in the Freestyle that, Steffen said, resulted in his best freestyle with Legolas so far.
Two other U.S. combinations that made it to the Freestyle, 2012 Olympic team partnerships of Tina Konyot and Calecto V and Jan Ebeling and Rafalca, finished 10th and 13th, respectively.
Spain’s Jose Daniel Martin Dockx rode the U.S.-owned Grandioso to eighth place on 78.175 per cent.
