AACHEN, Germany, June 29–Germany and Denmark dominated the CDIO5* Grand Prix Special Saturday, filling seven of the top 10 places at the World Equestrian Festival on a day of unexpected occurrences.
Helen Langehanenberg, the German 2013 World Cup champion on Damon Hill NRW, scored 80.667 per cent–the only rider above the 80 per cent ceiling–while Denmark’s 23-year-old Anna Kasprzak marked the 14th month of her first international competition on Donnperignon to take second place on 77.354 per cent. It was also the first Grand Prix Special for Anna and the Finnish Warmblood gelding since the Olympics in London last summer.
Isabell Werth of Germany on Don Johnson FRH Denmark’s two-time Olympic combination of Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Digby tied for third place on 76.437 per cent.
Austria’s Victoria Max-Theurer and Augustin OLD was the highest placed combination after the Germans and Danes, placing sixth on 74.458 per cent.
Steffen Peters of the United States and Legolas performing in the first Grand Prix Special outside their home state of Californa, had mistakes in both sets of one-tempi changes and the pair placed eighth on 73.375 per cent.
Tina Konyot of Palm City, Florida and Calecto V scored 71.104 per cent and her 2012 Olympic team mates Jan Ebeling of Moorpark, California and Rafalca were awarded 70.417 per cent to finish in the top 15 and will join Steffen for three Americans in the Freestyle Sunday.
The fourth American combination, Shelly Francis of Loxahatchee, Florida, and Doktor came into the arena and a heavy downpour that lasted most of their ride that scored 69.042 per cent. The rain stopped before the next combination.
Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand and Akeem Foldager recovered from a poor showing in the Grand Prix by changing their warmup routine and skipping the 10-minute ring to go straight into the competition arena to earn 73.958 per cent and seventh place.
Not so fortunate was Sweden’s Patrik Kittel riding the Australian-owned Toy Story who tripped during the piaffe and the horse slightly nicked his lip, drawng a small amount of blood but that meant automatic elimination.
