SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, California, Mar. 29–Jan Ebeling and Rafalca won the Festival of the Horse CDI3* Grand Prix Thursday in their first competition since last summer’s Olympic Games in London.
Jan of Moorpark and the 16-year-old Oldenburg mare (Argentinius x Ratine x Rubinstein) scored 70.979 per cent with Kathleen Raine of Murrieta and Breanna second on 70.340 per cent and Günter Seidel of Cardiff and Coral Reef Wylea third on 69.787 per cent.
Rafalca, he said, showed a “plenty of sparkle, full of life.”
The horse has been sound, though had lost a little conditioning since some conditioning during the months of an easy schedule following the Olympics.
But “mentally she was really there, willing to go.”
Jan and Rafalca were members of the United States team at the London Games that occurred in the midst of the American presidential election that led to the pair attracting worldwide media attention because of the ownership by Ann Romney, wife of the Republic candidate.
