BALVE, Germany, May 16, 2014–The Olympic partnership of Kristina Sprehe and Desperados FRH easily won the German Championship Grand Prix Friday in a big step to claiming a place on the team for their first World Equestrian Games less than 100 days away.
Kristina and the 13-year-old Hanoverian stallion were scored at 84.720 per cent from the all-German judging panel with a return to the form that put the pair among the top performers at the 2012 Olympics. They had struggled in recent months after ending a longtime training relationship as Kristina took on more responsibilities at the family’s stud and did not have the time to travel for daily coaching.
Gold medal team mates from the 2013 European Championships, Isabell Werth and Don Johnson FRH on 79.740 per cent and Fabienne Lütkemeier and D’Agostino FRH on 77.920 per cent were second and third, respectively. Isabell and El Santo NRW were also in fifth place on 75.060 per cent, with Ulla Salzgeber and the on-again, off-again Herzruf’s Erbe plaing fourth with 76.300 per cent.
Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW, Germany’s top ranked combination and No. 2 in the world, were excused from the championships but are scheduled to compete at the WEG-team deciding World Equestrian Festival CHIO in Aachen in two months.
