Prunthaller was also fined €4,000 (US$5,400) and Atschko €5,000 (US$6,700). Lawyers for both said they would appeal the sentences handed down Monday.
A stun gun was was alleged to have been used on several horses, including Harvard, a 14-year-old stallion that Prunthaller has competed at Grand Prix at several CDIs throughout Europe over the past four years.
“Such training methods are not justified under any circumstances, they caused the horses significant pain, suffering and great anxiety,” the court found. “A punishment of general and specific preventive grounds is required.
