AMSTERDAM, Jan. 19–Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW scored their first Freestyle victory over Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival when the German Olympic combination won the World Cup event at Amsterdam Saturday.

Helen and the 13-year-old Westfalen stallion (Donnerhall x Romanze x Rubinstein I) scored 86.025 per cent for the victory at the competition that has been traditionally a celebration of the top Dutch horses and riders from the string of world beaters ridden by Anky van Grunsven to Edward Gal and Totilas, Imke Schellekens-Bartels and Sunrise and Adelinde and Parzival.

Four of the five judges–two were from the Netherlands and there were no Germans–gave first place to Helen and Damon Hill who were performing for only the third time a Freestyle that the pair premiered in Stuttgart last November. The result was their second best personal score.

“Before I went in, I knew it wasn’t impossible for me to beat Adelinde, but I also knew that I could not afford to lose one point,” Helen said. ” I had to focus on my ride, to be strong and to think forward.

“We were here to try to win, and it’s a really good feeling. It’s an honor to finish ahead of Adelinde. She has really dominated our sport over the last years and has won so much. Now to be able to the in the same league and to be even better is really great!”

Asked if she had been worried that the atmosphere might blow her chances, Langehanenberg replied, “luckily he (Damon Hill NRW) really always like a big noisy arena and a lot of audience–he feels quite good with that!”

As to a big fan club that has deveoped for Helen and Damon Hill, she replied, “I didn’t notice it until after London. It is incredible how many people talk to me and come to me to ask for an autograph now, and it’s very nice.  I enjoy my sport and my horse, and if that gives other people some pleasure then that’s even nicer.”

Helen plans to compete at Neumunster, Germany next month then prepareor Gothenburg.

Adelinde and Parzival received 85.425 per cent, well below the scores posted this year by the Olympic individual silver medal pair.

“Parzival was good, but very spooky, yet I could handle him during the test although I had to work more to keep him focused,” she said.  The horse has matured dramatically over the last two years, having often been overwhelmed by excitement during prize-giving ceremonies in his early career. On Saturday,  \however he took fright after winning the Grand P\rix, in which Langehanenberg and Damon Hill lined up second, and he still seemed to be a bit unnerved by the atmosphere of the ring. “

Isabell Werth and the 12-year-old Don Johnson FRH posted a personal best of 82.050 per cent to fill third place.

Italy’s Valentina Truppa on Fixdesign Eremo del Castegna placed fourth with 80.775 per cent and maintained her lead in the Reem Acra FEI World Cup standings, after six of the eight qualifying competitions leading to the Final in Gothenbrg, Sweden April 24-28. The two remaining qualifiers are Neumunster, Germany and ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands.
