MECHELEN, Belgium, Dec. 27–Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW were the upset winners of the first European indoor World Dressage Masters Grand Prix Thursday when they beat the reigning World Cup champion Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival for the first time.
Helen and the Westfalen stallion (Donnerhall x Romanze x Rubinstein I) who will turn 13 years old next week and were the top finishing German partnership at the Olympics in London in summer, scored 82.468 per cent, their second highest personal best score. Four of the five judges placed the pair first.
The Dutch combination that is campaigning for a third straight World Cup title were second on 81.702 per cent with fellow Olympic squad member Patrik van der Meer and Uzzo in third on 72.319 per cent.
Adelinde and her coming 16-year-old KWPN gelding (Jazz x Fidora x Ulft) had bested Helen and Damon Hill–the Olympics, the World Cup Final and Rotterdam CDIO in 2012–until Thursday.
“I gave Damon Hill a rest after the Olympic Games and then we started working again slowly,” Helen said. “I don’t do a lot of hard work and difficult excercises at home. I just try to keep him fresh so that he has pleasure in his work.”
The CDI5* at Mechelen is the first indoor competition for WDM, though the event at Florida has been held in a covered arena for the past two years and is scheduled for the same venue next month.
Helen also won the Prix St. Georges aboard Rohjuwel OLD with a score of 72.237 per cent.
