SAUGERTIES, New York, Sept. 15–The 18-year-old Schumacker Solyst that rider Melissa Taylor described as “like a good red wine better with age” on Saturday won their second straight World Cup event in a month at the New England Dressage Association Fall Festival to kick off the North American League’s schedule of 10 competitions.

Melissa, based in Wellington, Florida, and the Danish Warmblood gelding (Schwadroneur x Patricia-Soelyst x Ragtime) scored 70.300 per cent in the Freestyle while Australia’s Ncholas Fyffe riding the U.S.-owned Sentimiento I in the horse’s first CDI was second on 69.325 per cent and Canadian Olympian David Marcus and Chrevi’s Capital third on 68.275 per cent.

The Grand Prix Friday was won by Cesar Parra of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and Van the Man on 69.745 per cent with U.S.-based Lars Petersen of Denmark on Mariett second on 68.255 per cent and David and Chrevi’s Capital third on 67.957 per cent.

At this same venue a month ago, Melissa and “Shumy,” as she calls the horse, won the first World Cup event of the 2012/13 season with a score of 70.700 per cent.

“He is my rock star,” Melissa said of the horse that she took over competing in mid-2008. Since then, the pair have shown extensively, mainly on the U.S. East Coast.

“He is 18 but feels like eight years old.

“We think he is aging like a good red wine, better with age.”

Melissa said she has not yet decided whether to pursue one of the two places reserved for North America comprising Canada, Mexico and the U.S. at the World Cup Final in Goteborg, Sweden next April. North American League World Cup qualifiers have been scheduled only in the United States leading to the 2013 Final.

In the NAL, the top two scores count for qualification while in the two European leagues points are awarded for placings and the Pacific League’s sole representative is decided by a head-to-head league final.

“I honestly didn’t think about it being a World Cup qualifier,” she said, ‘but, Wow! Now my day just got better!”

Nicholas Fyffe, who moved from Australia to the United States almost two years ago, took over the ride on Sentimiento while working with Wellington-based trainer Oded Shimoni beginning with the last winter season.

When he moved to Canada for the summer, he took the 12-year-old gray Pura Raza Español stallion (Cautivo XIII x Taladora III x Hedio) owned by Tamara Gerber, with him.
