DEL MAR, California, April 28–Steffen Peters rode Legolas to a personal best in their short CDI career to win the Del Mar National CDI3* Grand Prix Friday, but with scores from the five judges that were more than nine percentage points apart.
Steffen of San Diego, California, and the 10-year-old Westfalen gelding that have been partnered since last Christmas scored 76.574 per cent with a low score of 72.979 per cent from Brenda Minor of Canada and a high of 82.021 per cent from Betty Brown of New Zealand, though all placed the pair first.
Adrienne Lyle of Ketchum, Idaho, and Wizard, who spent the winter competing in Florida, were second on 71.511 per cent and Günter Seidel of Cardiff, California, third on 69.617 per cent.
In the four CDIs that Steffen and Legolas have competed in this year, the scores have risen from 71.000 per cent to Friday’s 76.574 per cent.
Legolas, owned by Akiko Yamazaki who also owns Ravel ridden by Steffen, was previously owned and trained by Ullrich Kasselmann whose own Horses & Dreams CDI4* at Hagen, Germany, is being held this weekend.
