‘S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, April 19–Jerich Parzival failed the veterinary inspection Thursday but will be re-inspected Friday morning just three hours before the start of the Grand Prix at the World Cup Final in which she is the defending champion.
The news came as a shock not just for this World Cup Final but also for the prospects for the Dutch team at the Olympics in London this summer.
However, Adelinde rode Parzival in a training session in the competition arena about an hour after the insppetion.
The 15-year-old KWPN chestnut gelding (Jazz x Fidora x Ulft) and Adelinde are the top ranked combination in the world.
The draw for the Grand Prix was open, meaning no preference for ranked riders, and Adelinde and Parzival will start second while the two United States riders, Jan Ebeling and Shawna Harding and Australia’s Rachel Sanna drew the most favorable starting positions–the last three places in the field of 18 combinations.
The pair won the World up title in Leipzig, Germany, last year, their first world championship, and in won both the Grand Prix Special and the Freestyle at the European Championships in Rotterdam in August.
Parzival was injured and unable to compete at the World Cup in Las Vegas in 2009.
The pair were disqualified from the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010 when Parzival bit his tongue and blood showed on his lips about a minute into their Grand Prix test.
Parzival will be re-inspected at 9 am Central European Time (3 am U.S. Eastern Time) Friday.
The CDI4* Grand Prix was won by Nathalie zu Sayn Wittgenstein on Digby, the reserve championship combination at the 2011 World Cup Final.
Nathalie and the 15-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding (Donnerhall x Oxenholm Pamina x Sandro) scored 74.894 per cent with the Imke Schellekens-Bartels on Hunter Douglas Toots second on 72.851 per cent and Edward Gak on Blue Hors Romanov third on 71.596 per cent.
