DORTMUND, Germany, Mar. 9–Laura Bechtolsheimer and the 17-year-old Mistral Hojris, the star combination of Great Britain’s ascent to the pinnacle of global dressage, were victorious in the prestigious Signal Iduna Cup CDI4* Grand Prix Friday, scoring well above 80 per cent in their first competition of this Olympic year.

Germany’s Kristina Sprehe, who less than a year ago was competing in the Under-25 division. rode Desperados to runnerup with a personal best score in the starting lineup that included some of Europe’s top partnerships.

Laura and the chestnut Danish Warmblood gelding (Michellino x Virginia x Ibsen) scored 81.170 per cent in their first appearance in the show ring since capturing the Grand Prix Freestyle at London’s Olympia last December following three years of championship successes, triple silver at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky a in 2010 and gold and silver at the 2009 and 2011 European Championships.

All five judges placed the British pair at the top of their awards and also all agreed on the performance by the 25-year-old Kristina and the 11-year-old Hanoverian stallion (De Niro x Wie Musik x Wolkenstein II).

Kristina and Desperados were awarded three scores above 80 per cent for their average of 79.894 per cent, easily eclipsing their previous best  of 75.723 per cent at Oldenburg in November.

Fellow German Ulla Salzgeber and her 13-year-old Rhinelander gelding Herzruf’s Erbe whom she has been aiming for this year’s London Olympics were third on 78.298 per cent and Austria’s Victoria Max-Theurer on Augustin OLD fourth on 77.298 per cent.
