FRANKFURT, Germany, Dec. 16–Sanneke Rothenberger and Deveraux OLD captured the Young Rider World Cup Final Prix St. Georges on Friday, but the loss of points for going off course made the contest closer than it would have been.
The German combination scored 73.474 per cent, with Sweden’s Elin Aspnäs and Donna Romma second on 72.211 per cent and Denmark’s Carina Nevermann-Torup and Blue Boy third on 71.237 per cent.
Sanneke who is now aged 19, won three gold medals at the European Junior Championships and graduated high school this year while competing at top shows with Deveraux, a 10-year-old gelding (De Niro x Odelia x Rhodiamant).
The pair were above the 74 per cent mark when they did not perform the canter half pass and thus had a total of 10 points–two from each of the five judges–deducted from their score.
Great Britain’s para-equestrian world and European gold medalist Sophie Wells rode Pinocchio to sixth place with 68.316 per cent and assured herself a start in the Freestyle Final scheduled for Saturday.
The two non-European competitors did not fare so well and will compete in the B Final on Sunday.
Isabelle Liebler of Greenwich, Connecicut, rode Watson as the U.S. entry in the only annual global championships for Young Riders.
The pair scored 65.158 per cent for 10th place.
Ashlea Day, an Australian based in Cochranville, Pennsylvania, rode her own CP Perolus and finished 14th with 60.105 per cent.
