STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 20–Isabell Werth riding El Santo NRW in their first competiton since the European Championships on Sunday won her ninth German Masters title in claiming the Grand Prix Special shortened for the Olympics.
Isabell and the 10-year-old Rhinelander gelding (Ehrentusch x Rythme x Rythmus) scored 77.867 per cent with fellow Germans Monica Theodorescu on Whisper second on 73.733 per cent and Brigitte Wittig third on 73.311 per cent.
The Olympic version of the Special was supposed to take at least one minute off the full version, but Stuttgart organizers timed the rides and found that it reduced the time by only 20 to 30 seconds.
Isabell made it clear she is not a fan of the new version that she rode here for the first time and declared it was “not great” and that it took “the heart out” of the test.
Don Johnson ridden by Isabell won the Otto Lörke Prize for the 10th time while the Piaffe Award was won by Desperadoes ridden by 25-year-old Kristina Sprehe.
