SYDNEY, Nov. 12–Heath Ryan and his 2009 World Cup Final mount Regardez Moi won the inaugural Equitana Sydney Grand Prix Freestyle World Cup qualifier Saturday night, debuting a new freestyle to notch the best result for the pair since the Australian veteran suffered a stroke two years ago.
Heath and the 15-year-old Oldenburg stallion (Rubinstein I x Chlotilde x Consul) scored 71.950 per cent to beat the top New Zealand pair of Louisa Hill and Bates Antonello on 70.275 per cent, who won the Grand Prix Friday.
Chantal Wigan and Ferero who were on the team that qualified Australia for a berth at next year’s Olympics in London was third on 69.475 per cent.
Heath, 53, has represented Australia at the top levels of both dressage and eventing and is a popular eventing clinician in the United States as well as Australia.
“I was biting my fingers nails when the last girls went round,” Heath said of trying out the new freestyle. “They were in great form and it was just one of those nights where things went well for me and they had the odd glitch so I snuck in there–but I’ve got to keep going now.
“It was great for him as well (Regardez Moi ). His owner passed away last week and I know she would have been really pleased and would be smiling down on us.”
Heath said this comeback may help him in the selection process for next year’s Olympics.
“I don’t know if the Olympic team was selected tomorrow I’d make it,” he said, “but I think I’d be one of the final combinations they’d talk about.
“His (Regardez Moi ) form is not getting any worse, he’s on a comeback trail for sure. But those girls are so good and they have the history of being consistent as well.”
