ERMELO, The Netherlands, Nov. 2–Australia and New Zealand qualified teams for the Olympic Games next year in an unusul procedure spanning the southern and northern hemispheres that ended at the Dutch equestrian federation headquarters Wednesday.
Australia was first and New Zealand second in the qualifying competitions–the first one was in Sydney last weekend–to squeeze out South Africa among the only three teams seeking two places in London reserved for Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia ands Oceania. Japan had signaled its intention to compete but dropped out.
The two Oceania nations join host Great Britain, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the USA which have already qualified in London next July.
In Ermelo, Lyndal Oatley on Potifar scored 69.957 per cent, the highest of all the Australians and a personal best, while three-time Olympian Mary Hanna on Sancette scored 68.702 per cent. In Sydney, Rachel Sanna on Jaybee Alabaster scored 69.106 per cent. The score for Chantal Wigan and Ferero of 62.468 per cent was the lowest and thus discarded.
Lyndal and Rachel were team mates on the same horses at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, which is where Lyndal and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding (Jazz x Mierthe x Pion) posted their previous high of 65.574 per cent.
New Zealand fielded their full team in Sydney and finished with a total score of 194.77. Louisa Hill and Bates Antonello scored 66.13 per cent, Vanessa Way on KH Arvan 65.51 per cent, Nicky Pope on Fabarchie 63.13 per cent and Shiwon Green on Gosh whose score of 61.36 was discarded.
