Top European dressage riders will join leading Brazilian competitors in the premiere of the €100,000 (US$144,000) Oi Athina Onassis Horse Show in Rio de Janeiro Sept. 2-4..

The dressage competition in conjunction with the Global Champions Tour will be the largest equestrian event in Latin America this year.

The staging of the Olympic discipline of dressage at the Athina Onassis Show will be the first time is has been included with the GCT jumping show in its fifth year in Brazil.

From Europe, the riders include Hans Peter Minderhoud and Edward Gal of The Netherlands, Isabell Werth of Germany, Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein of Denmark, Patrik Kittel of Sweden and Victoria Max-Theurer of Austria.

Brazil will have four participants, including two Olympians, and all classified in the Oi Serra & Mar of equestrianism circuit, Luiza Almeida, Larcelo Alexandre, Rogério Clementino and Rodolpho Riskalla.

The dressage event in Brazil represents a major commitment in the growth of the sport in Brazil in partiular that will host the 2016 Olympics as well as worldwide. Brazil has become a global economic powerhouse with vast natural resources.

Brazil was host of the Pan American Games in 2007 that included all three Olympic equestrian disciplines of dressage, jumping and eventing.
