ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Aug. 20–Adelinde Cornelissen rode Jerich Parzival to victory in the Grand Prix Special to repeat as the first individual gold medalist of this year’s European Championships, overcoming an expensive course error that was minor compared with mistakes that seemed to plague the entire class. The ride forTotilas was the most mistake-filled of his career.

The 32-year-old Dutch rider’s mistake was expensive with two points being deducted from each of the marks of the seven judges–so it was 14 points deducted from her total–but her score of 82.113 per cent gave the home crowd enough to cheer loudly following Thursday’s third place finish for The Netherlands in the team competition. The pair won at Windsor two years ago with a score of 84.042 per cent that was a record at the time.

Great Britain filled the second and third places–Carl Hester and a tired Uthopia scoring 81.682 per cent and Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris, whom she said was feeling one of the best ever until the walk when he lost his impulsion and they finished on 79.256 per cent.

Totilas ridden by Matthias Alexander Rath of Germany came fourth on 77.039 per cent with costly mistakes in the omne-tempi changes, transitions and the piaffe that is normally one of the horse’s strengths. Even so, it was the highest placed combination for Germany.

Sweden’s Patrik Kittel on Watermill Scandic HBC in fifth place on 76.771 per cent and Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro in sixth on 76.548 per cent finished aherad of Germany’s Isabell Werth on El Santo NRW 76.533 per cent.

However, the mistakes that seemed to affect most of the 30 combinations in Rotterdam extended to the streaming video of the event that dropped out after about 20 rides so viewers around the world did not see the last 10 rides. The cause was a major system failure at the British-based service provider, but the FEI said that the last 14 rides will be available on video on demand on the FEI-TV site Sunday.

Adelinde said the ride on the 14-year-old KWPN gelding by Jazz felt great and she rode two-tempi changes with confidence until she heard the bell ring and she realized she and Parzival should have been doing half passes.

“The horse was in top shape,” she said, “but I tried to screw up. Even when I make the mistake, he still won it for me. I kicked myself afterwards but we had a good score, even though it could have been better.”

She was more focused after the course error and rode to make up for the lost points.

It worked. One judge awarded the pair a 10 for piaffe and another judge 10 for the final halt.

Carl Hester said that Uthopia, a 10-year-old KWPN stallion by Metall, had competed in only six competitions in his 16 -month career before these championships was tired but “performed the best he can at the level he is at.”

Uthopia collected 15 marks of 10 from the seven judges, all for what is clearly becoming his patented extended trot. The black stallion earned five 10s for the first extension, three for each of the 2nd and 3rd extended trots and four for the final extension.

Carl admitted that he was very focused on doing well in the Special “so I squeezed him out and he got a little tired. We got it wrong in the one-tempis but his passage and extended trot were just wonderful.

“I did enjoy my ride and I really wanted this medal–I wanted to steal one or win one!”

The Freestyle will be held Sunday, but Carl admits he is hardly prepared.

“I’ve only once done a Kur to Music with this horse and I have a new Kur now which I’ve never ridden,” he said. “After Hickstead we decided I really needed a new Kur, so tomorrow its going to be a surprise, for me and for everyone else!”
