HICKSTEAD, England, July 31–Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival demonstrated their prowess as the world’s top ranked combination to take the World Dressage Masters CDI5* Freestyle Sunday, while Carl Hester and Uthopia debuted their first international musical performance for the runnerup place.

The score for the Dutch combination of Adelinde and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding by Jazz of 84.925 per cent was among their top five results in the five years the pair have competed at Grand. Carl Hester and Uthopia, a KWPN stallion by Metall, and just 10 years old were the only other pair above 80 per cent with a score of 81.800 per cent to certify the pair as British stars along with Laura Bechtolsheimer who did not ride here.

Carl rode Uthopia to the tones of Tom Jones, and admitted “I need to trim my music a bit, so it fits him better. But I am so happy with Uthopia, he is an incredible horse!”.

One of the most popular and emotional rides of the competition was by Emma Hindle and Lancet, a stallion now aged 18 but who represented Great Britain at the 2008 Olympics and was a member of the 2009 European Championships silver medal team. Competing at only their second CDI this year after almost two years out of the show ring, the pair scored 77.350 per cent for third place.

“Though,” Emma said, “he will probably not be sad at all, since he will do what he loves the most; namely, breeding!”

Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro, a nine-year-old KWPN gelding by Negro and also owned by Carl Hester, won the Grand Prix Special earlier Sunday with a Special personal best score of 76.604 per cent in their Grand Prix career that measures only in months. Two combinations from The Netherlands, Leida Collins-Strijk and On Top, and Sander Marijnissen on Moedwil placed second and third, respectively, with scores of 70.479 per cent and 69.813 per cent.

Laura Bechtolsheimer, Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin next head to Rotterdam for the European Championships Aug. 17-21 with a shot to challenge a powerful German squad led by Matthias Alexander Rath and Totilas for the team gold medal.
