HICKSTEAD, England, July 30–Great Britain’s Carl Hester and Uthopia won the World Dressage Masters CDI5* Grand Prix Saturday, posting a personal best at Grand Prix for the pair in beating the globe’s top ranked combination of Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival less than three weeks before the European Championships.
Carl and the 10-year-old KWPN stallion by Metall competing in only their sixth international level competition since starting Grand Prix 16 months ago, scored 80.872 per cent, the first award above 80 per cent at Grand Prix.
Adelinde and Parzival, the 14-year-old KWPN gelding by Jazz that she has trained to the top of the world rankings, scored 79.298 per cent for second place with the points varying from a low of 75.745 per cent from Raphael Saleh of France to a high of 82.243 per cent from Peter Holler of Germany.
Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro, a nine-year-old KWPN gelding by Negro and the other half of Carl’s collection of top horses, placed third with 78.255 per cent for their personal best in the four months the pair have been competing at this level.
Laura Bechtolsheimer and her triple Olympic silver medal mount, Mistral Hojris, were not competing here but barring anything untoward, the squad going to Rotterdam for the European Championships Aug. 17-21 could have three combinations each capable of producing about 80 per cent that could give Great Britain a shot at gold for the first time.
Britain won silver at the 2009 European Championships on their home ground at Windsor, but Adelinde and Parzival were one of the stars of that event as a member of The Netherlands’ team that won gold, beating team mate Edward Gal and Totilas in the Grand Prix Special and finishing runnerup to Edward and Toto in the Freestyle.
Since then, Totilas has been sold to Germany and is now ridden by Matthias Alexander Rath.
The CDI3* Grand Prix Special was won by Great Britain’s Daniel Sherriff on Bayford Hall Dallaglio with 68.000 per cent with The Netherlands’ Wilma Wernsen on Oaklarette second with 66.896 per cent and the USA’s Dennis Callin on d’Accord 58, based in England, third on 65.708 per cent (complete results below).
