AACHEN, Germany, July 13–Steffen Peters and Weltino’s Magic topped some of the world’s top riders on their best small tour horses to win the Prix St. Georges on Wednesday, the first dressage competition of the World Equestrian Festival CHIO Aachen Wednesday. Germany’s Helen Langehanberg on Damon Hill NRW won the CDI4* Grand Prix with a score of 73.106 per cent.

Steffen, of San Diego, California, admitted the ride in a cold, steady rain was not the best he had experienced on the nine-year-old Westfalen gelding owned by Jen Hlavacek with a score of 72.579 per cent to eke out the victory over Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand on Famaso with 72.342 per cent.

Edward Gal of The Netherlands on Voice placed third on 71.763 per cent, Dutch team mate Hans Peter Minderhoud on Exquis Vivaldi was fourth on 71.500 per cent and Isabell Werth the top finishing German on Der Stern in fifth with 71.447 per cent.

Steffen and “Magic” were eighth to go in the class of 17 entries and had to wait through the second half of the competition while some of the world’s best small tour partnerships challenged his lead.

“I had a lot of horse in the first 15 minutes of the warmup which got me a little worried because he;s usually laid back,” Steffen told dressage-news.com.

“But he came into this stadium bigger than anything he’s ever been in before and full of people and was a little starstruck for a few seconds.”

But Magic settled down and the highlights of the rider were easy extended canter, clean changes and the usual good walk that, Steffen said, he’s glad the judges in Europe also appreciated.

“It was a very good competition with some of the best riders in the world and wonderful horses,” he said.

“It is nice to see that Magic can keep up with the best in the world.”

Steffen said, though, that the pair had better tests and despite a small bobble in the extended trot, “hopefully we can do better in the Intermediaire Saturday night.”

After Aachen, Weltino’s Magic will next compete in the Pan American Games qualifying competition at Gladstone, New Jersey in September. He said he will not seek a bye from the qualifier, which he received on Ravel in 2010 at the qualifying competition for the World Equestrian Games.

Steffen said that if Magic qualifies for the U.S. team for the Pan Ams he will take Ravel to Gladstone with him to maintain his training and fitness.
