FRITZENS, Austria, June 24–The spectacular nine-year-old Valegro was ridden by Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin to a clear victory over owner Carl Hester on his Uthopia in the Grand Prix at the Manfred Swarovski Memorial Tournament CDI4* Friday.

The score of 77.979 per cent was the highest by Charlotte and Velagro–whose ownership is shared by Carl and Roly Luard–in the three months the pair have competed internationally at Grand Prix. In the three competitions in March and April in France all scores for the pair were above 73 per cent.

Valegro and Charlotte received a mark of 10 from Dutch judge Ghislain Fouarge for a piaffe of 12-15 steps, while three others gave the pair 9s and the other judge awarded 8.

Carl, who owns the KWPN gelding by Negro, scored 75.319 per cent on his 10-year-old Uthopia while Germany’s Wolfram Wittig was third on Bertoli W with 71.681 per cent.

U.S. Olympian Günter Seidel of Cardiff, California, competing in Europe for the first time since the 2006 World Equestrian Games at Aachen, Germany, rode Sundaboy in the first international competition for the pair.

Günter was injured a year ago in an accident on his other Grand Prix horse, U II, in the first ride for U II after arriving in Germany for a planned training and competition swing. Günter broke his pelvis in the accident. Sundayboy was also out of training for several months. The pair scored 64.851 per cent in Friday’s Grand Prix.

Brigitte Wittig on Balmoral W won the Prix St. Georges with a score of 71.895 per cent, Austria’s Christian Schumach on Auheim’s Rhaposario was second on 71.000 per cent and the USA’s Shawna Harding of Aiken, South Carolina on Rigo was third on 69.132 per cent.
