WIESBADEN, Germany, June 13–Matthias Alexander Rath and Totilas overcame their shaky Grand Prix to produce a winning performance in the CDI4* Grand Prix Special Monday and post their first score above 80 per cent as well as the highest for Matthias on any horse and among the highest for a German combination in an international Grand Prix Special in recent years.
Great Britain’s Laura Bechtolsheimer on her championship medal mount, Mistral Hojris, who easily won the Grand Prix with Matthias and Totilas placing third, was the runnerup in the Special.
Matthias and Totilas scored 81.479 per cent with Laura and Mistral Hojris on 80.500 per cent and Denmark’s Sune Hansen and Blue Hors Romanov third on 73.146 per cent.
The turnaround by Matthias and the 11-year-old black stallion was dramatic–to their first score above 80 per cent in four outings at two competitions from a 72.915 per in the Grand Prix a day earlier, the lowest score ever for Totilas.
In the Special, three of the five judges placed the German combination first, and all of their scores were above 80 per cent. The marks included three 10s, one of them for one-tempi changes with the other marks for that movement being 9s. In the Grand Prix, mistakes in the one-tempis resulted in marks of 4s and 5s. The left pirouette Monday received three 8s, one 8.5 and one 9. In the Grand Prix that movement scored 3s across the board.
A jubilant Matthias knew he had nailed the ride with fist pumps and a determined thrust of his jaw as the pair left the arena which was surrounded by a huge crowd on this public holiday. He has never scored 80 per cent or higher on any of the three Grand Prix horses he has competed–Renoir-UNICEF, Triviant 2 and Sterntaler-UNICEF–at any of the three Grand Prix levels.
The performance was similar in the only two competitions–Munich a week ago and Wiesbaden this week–so far by Matthias and the Gribaldi stallion that have been partnered for less than six months since being acquired by Paul Schockemöhle and Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff–a less than stellar Grand Prix with a strong second day Special.
A review of the records by dressage-news.com found no scores by a German combination in the past five years to equal that by Matthias and Totilas. Martin Schaudt and Westall VA scored 82.56 per cent in the Special at Neumünster, Germany in 2005 that was a world record at the time.
The current world record score in the Special is 86.458 per cent that was set by Holland’s Edward Gal on Totilas at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany, last year. The pair hold all three Grand Prix level records.
Edward trained and competed Totilas for four years through small tour to Grand Prix.
The next scheduled competition for Totilas is the German championships at Balve later this week.
