WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, May 14–When Christina Vinios bought Folkestone at the Oldenburg auction a year ago, she ignored advice to keep the horse in Germany for training and brought the horse to the U.S. to ride herself.

On Saturday, Christina rode the gelding by Fidertantz out of a Rubenstein mare in their first ever FEI five-year-old class and scored 88 per cent before two judges, Fran Dearing and Thomas Poulin at the Gold Coast May Dressage, a national competition.

Although her parents have seen most of the horse’s competition rides they were not in Florida for this weekend but at home in Massachusetts.

Now, an excited Christina is looking at “a bunch of plans” including heading to Leesburg, Virginia next month for the last of the three qualifiers to select a horse for the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Dressage in Verden, Germany Aug. 3-7. The other qualifiers are in Wayne, Illinois for the Midwest and La Cañada-Flintridge, California for the West Coast.

“I’m ready to go for it,” she said. “We’ll try our best.”

Christina, age 27 and an adult amateur who lives in Wellington, Florida, said when Folkestone first came over she rode with Robert Dover but when he had to focus on coaching the Canadian team for the World Equestrian Games she switched to the Wellington-based Israeli Oded Shimoni who is stabled at Stillpoint Farm where Robert is also based.

The combination have not competed in any qualifiers for the U.S. Young Horse Championships.

“We’ll go to Virigina and see how we do,” she said. “This was our first five-year-old test today.”

She didn’t sleep well Friday night, so that might have taken some of the edge off any nerves.

“It was a good test,” Christina said. “It felt good.”

Christina has two other horses in Wellington, including Donna Carina 6 that she competed at 2nd level for a score of 75 per cent. She also has a young horse in Germany that she owns with her grandmother, Jean Vinios.

She rides full time and wants to go “all the way” in the sport.

In the Grand Prix, Arlene “Tuny”Page finished first and second, with Alina on 75.106 per cent and  on her 2006 World Cup Final mount, Wild One, on 71.489 per cent. Tine Zinglersen of New York on Neumunster was third with 65.319 per cent.
