‘S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, Mar. 26–Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival scored a personal best of 87.90 per cent to win the last World Cup qualifier Saturday and head to the Final in Leipzig, Germany, a month from now with an opportunity to claim their first World Cup title.
Adelinde, 32, and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding came back from the heartbreaking disqualification at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky six months ago to win all five of the 10 World Cup qualifiers they contested in the series of 10 events and finish at the top of the Western European League.
Germany’s Isabell Werth on Warum Nicht FRH, who won the 2007 World Cup Final in Las Vegas, was second on 82.050 per cent and Holland’s Hans Peter Minderhoud on Exquis Nadine was third on 79.725 per cent. Isabell rode three different horses in the series and finished second overall in the most competitive WEL.
“We did make one small mistake when he did a flying change after the extended canter but otherwise he was fantastic,” Isabell said.
The German-based American, Catherine Haddad on Winyamaro, the only non-European, finished in seventh place with a score of 77.00 per cent.
The partnership of Adelinde and Parzival won all five of the 2010/2011 qualifiers in which they competed–Stockholm, London, Amsterdam, Göteborg, Sweden and ‘s-Hertogenbosch–on their way to the Final in Leipzig, Germany April 27-May 1.
The victory at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in her homeland was especially sweet as they won here two years ago and led the Western European League standings but Parzival was injured after flying to Las Vegas for the Final and did not compete. And in the Final at this same venue in 2010, the pair won the Grand Prix but placed second behind Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas in the Freestyle. Totilas has since been sold to Germany.
Their score easily eclipsed the previous highest mark for the pair of 85.650 per cent that was set at the CDI5* in Hickstead, England last July.
“Yesterday Parzival was so relaxed and today he felt really good again,” Adelinde said.
She believes her horse’s confidence has been reinforced by his training routine which includes doing a lot of things that other dressage horses may never get to do. “He goes out in the field, I take him for rides in the woods and we go cantering on a racetrack quite a lot–that’s what makes him happy. In training its about controlling him all the time, but its great to just go out and have fun together too–it’s all been about building up trust and he’s learned to really enjoy himself now. That’s why I don’t take him into the prize-giving anymore. I don’t want to lose that trust because it really worries him.”
‘s-Hertogenbosch, which will host the Finals of both dressage and jumping in 2012, was the last of the 10-event series that began in Odense, Denmark, five months ago and hopscotched over seven countries.
The Pacific League was won by Australia’s Chantal Wigan and Ferero while the last of seven qualifiers in the North American League is scheduled for next weekend at Burbank, California.
Earlier, the Grand Prix Special was won by Germany’s Helen Langehanenberg on the 11-year-old Damon Hill NRW with a score of 76.958 per cent, with Dutch riders Hans Peter Minderhoud on IPS Tango with 73.833 per cent and Sander Marijnissen on his 17-year-old Moedwill with 72.938 per cent second and third, respectively.
